Kate Baray Runner-Up in SPR Fantasy Category!

Winners of The SPR Full Moon Awards Announced!

Runner Up – Fantasy – Kate Baray – Lost Libraryrunnerupfantasyweb

Lizzie led a normal life…until the Book arrived.
Author Kate Baray begins her new urban fantasy romance series with Lost Library, a tale of werewolves, magic, adventure and romance.

John Braxton arrives unannounced on Lizzie’s doorstep. Little does she know that when she invites him for a drink on the porch, Lizzie opens the door to a secret world of Lycan, magic, spelled books, and a power hungry mastermind. Caught up in one man’s search for power, Lizzie soon begins to uncover surprising secrets about her own past and powers–but not before stumbling upon a library like no other. And romance with a serious but sexy Lycan? It might just happen…

The judges were most impressed with Kate Baray’s professionalism in presentation of her book: a fine example of how a self-published work can be just as finished as a big-name publication.

Review: Irradiance by David Bruns

22297201The Community is your first responsibility as a Citizen.
The Community is your mate. When you are alone, we are together.
All are welcome in the Community. White is the color of all colors.
The resources of the Community belong to the Community.
The mind is the true voice of a Citizen.

The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sindra. A world where minds are joined, vocalization is punishable by ‘recycling’ and dystopia is more than just a word. Irradiance begins with murder, and leads the reader through levels of mental and psychological programming, space-jump technology and time-space continuum’s, as is to be expected from any dystopian fantasy. But then, it grows, deepens to a story of life under totalitarian governments, secrets and lies, and the bonds of family, bonds that must be hidden away from a regime that sees no value in kindness or love, no strength in free thought. Which is rather oxymoronic considering the presence of two statues in “The Hall” – the statues of Freedom and Knowledge.

A world of euphemisms, where “processing” is just another word for euthanize, and cruelty is oh-so-cold.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of dystopian novels. They are just too ‘real’ in their cold, bitter vision of a world with no color, no joy, no true happiness. There was much to send chills over my skin in Irradiance. But to tell you true, the very bleakness of the world of Sindra gives warms and promise, hope, to a book that ends by being a story of possibilities, sacrifice, and new beginnings.

Overall? This first of The Dream Guild Chronicles shows stunning promise for lovers of dystopian novels and gives a calculated warning about the direction our own world faces in the new future.

This book was provided to me by the author in return for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.

Review: Supergirls by Mav Skye

22742696I have seen beyond the bounds of infinity and drawn down daemons from the stars. . . . I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness. . . – H.P. Lovecraft – From Beyond, 16 November 1920

I realize that I live on the bubble of insanity. I feel the weight of human suffering, loneliness and despair on me all the time. It’s not getting easier; if anything, it’s always right on the edge of my skin. – Erwin McManus

As you step into Supergirls, you are transported. Transported to a world, a life, straight out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting. A visit to Dante’s Inferno, a glimpse into the minds of the damned. Brutal. Savage. An acid trip into Naraka, tortured by Yama, denied the relief of rebirth.

Jason Michel, in Pulp Metal Magazine said of Mav Skye’s Supergirls: . . . (It) is grounded in the mundane reality of poverty, yet as it unfolds becomes an increasingly surreal and cinematic experience; as if Sam Peckinpah or Tarantino had directed the girls from Scooby Doo, who were all grown up and had taken some real bad life choices.

I can only agree.

Supergirls is, in its own way, a story of sisterhood and family, the bonds of love and sacrifice, all played out on a screen of the absurd that would send chills up the back of Dahmer and make Spring-Heel Jack and Béla Kiss feel emphatically mediocre. The horror is horrifying, without a doubt – but to my mind, the portions that are real, and all too common in our world today, are the scariest moments, the most frightening horrors of all.

The pages of a graphic novel flashed through my mind as I read Mav Skye’s work, the scenes backlit by a bloody light, built of straight black lines and soulless eyes. For anyone who adores dark fantasy, this is a luscious treat for the mind, a glimpse into inane, mundane, yet horrific madness that kept my eyes glued to the page and my heart pounding as I traversed the darkness into the cellar of Skye’s mind.

Watch out for the rotting stairs . . .

I received Supergirls from the publisher in return for a realistic review. This is a novella, only 87-pages, and would make an incredible Halloween night read! Highly recommend. Knitting Acquisitions Editor!  Acquisitions Editor, Knitting (There is a position for Quilting Acquisitions Editor as well!)

Yes, I would very much like to do this – the editing and analysis parts would be a blast, but I’m not sure the whole “face of the industry” thing would work for me! Anyway, if you know anyone in the Denver area who would be interested, I can’t imagine a better job for an outgoing personality!

  • Use analysis, interpretation and application of data in conjunction and category  knowledge to define, articulate and develop a vision and curriculum for the category in conjunction with Category Management and Content and Education leaders.

Does that all sounds like something you’d love to do? Awesome! Your experience and background may include, but doesn’t need to be limited to:

  • Analytical expertise demonstrated in creative, professional or academic environments
  • Project management and planning experience to execute complex work in line with tight deadlines
  • Ability and interest in working in a fast-paced, ever-changing, demanding environment

H.P. Lovecraft

About the author

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft’s major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft’s protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.

Although Lovecraft’s readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

“There’s nothing wooden about Dead Man’s Carve.  Roberts mingles a sparkling, unique voice with a great old-fashioned mystery.”
Wendy Lyn Watson
Mysteries a la Mode
Pet Boutique Mysteries (as Annie Knox)

Rilee Dust isn’t your typical wood carver, she’s young and making a go of it in the small village of Tickle Creek, Oregon. She’s also the only one in town who isn’t determined to get rid of her strip club neighbor. Everyone else, however, is ready to evict the Girls, Girls, Girls.

When a dog adopts her and turns her life upside down, Rilee’s not so sure it’s a good thing. Especially when he leads her to a moose, a military man and a dead body. Because the moose kicked her butt, the man saved her life and the dead body is one of her customers.

Now Rilee’s smack dab in the middle of all the small town politics with a killer on the loose who has an ax to grind. And Rilee just may be the next victim to have her name carved in stone.

“Bogart!” I yelled, frantically circling and trying to locate the direction of his cries. “Bogart…Heeere!” Catching a glimpse of movement to my right I ran toward the commotion.

An eighty pound black and brown Boxer flew through the air in my direction. Ears cutting through the wind, his eyes looked crazed and his jowls flapped as he cried out in fear. The cause of his flight … an eight hundred pound Moose who was pissed off and raising cane. Or in this case raising Bogart with her nose. He landed on his feet — like a colt trying to stand for the first time — legs splitting, chest smacking the earthen floor.

None of that stopped his feet from moving. Bogart was back in the race of his life as the irate cow charged after him.

“Oh, crap.” My stomach dropped as I realized she wasn’t done with her assault, and I was the much larger target as Bogart led her straight to me. I turned and ran, with Bogart hot on my heels. The sound of the cow’s breath filled my head. The distance closed between us. Zigzagging through the trees, I couldn’t outrun her. Nor could I out-maneuver her. I just hoped she’d get tired and realized we weren’t a threat.

Unfortunately, she didn’t feel the same way.

Three career paths resonated for Kym during her early childhood: a detective, an investigative reporter, and…a nun. Being a nun, however, dropped by the wayside when she became aware of boys—they were the spice of life she couldn’t deny.

In high school her path was forged when she took her first job at a dry cleaners and met every cop in town, especially the lone female police officer in patrol. From that point on there was no stopping Kym’s pursuit of a career in law enforcement—even if she had to duct tape rolls of coins to her waist to meet the weight requirements to be hired.

Kym followed her dream and became a detective that fulfilled her desire to be an investigative reporter, with one extra perk—a badge. Promoted to sergeant Kym spent the majority of her career in SVU. She retired from the job reluctantly when her husband drug her kicking and screaming to another state, but writing continued to call her name, at least in her head.
